Computer Animation

Here is the scene that I'm working on for my computer animation class. The picture on the top is my model and the one below it is the actual surrealist painting by Magritte that it is based off of. Like my character model, it was created using the program called Maya.

I really like how my scene looks so far, especially the glass that I was able to make transparent. If you look closely, you can see that there is an actual reflection on the cabinet mirrors, another feature that I'm pretty pleased with. The carpet and wood textures were fun to make. They were created in photoshop using photographs I took of objects around my house. As soon as I'm done modeling this scene, I will be able to begin animating it!

  1. That is absolutely awesome. I wish I had the abillity of animating through computers. I loved the class we took together last semester with creating own world designs in games. It would be fun to learn how to make 3d images and making them animated. Were you trying to depict the life of items that are always crammed into tiny spaces and how they are in there own home?

  2. Wow! That is some incredible work you have done. I really like the color of the match stick that you have present (If that is a match stick?). I also really like the shadow you applied to the drinking glass it gives this painting a more realistic feel. Great work!

  3. Love Magritte. Now I'd like to see Le Blanc-Seing or the Son of Man.

  4. Yes, it's going to be fun to animate this scene. I like your idea of depicting the life of items and how they find their own home. That's pretty creative :). I like the painting because it plays with perspective, and I'm planning on animating the scene through the eyes of a person who wakes up in the room and is confused about why the objects are all weird sizes. It'll be a challenge but hopefully it'll turn out nice

  5. Great work! Replicating a still life painting is not easy. The wood grain and cloud pattern look particularly good. One thing I notice is that your model is darker than the original. What I would recommend doing is leaving your light setup the same, but add an ambient light to your scene and place is right in the middle of the room. Set the intensity down to something real small like .1 or .2 (play with it, these values are totally dependent on scene size). This will bring some more subtle light into the room (and it should definitely illuminate the walls like the painting). Give it a try!

  6. This is magnificent... i like how animation makes you aware of every little space and every little thing looks so much more interesting.

  7. Thanks for the tip Jeremy! I get the feeling you've used maya before. If you have any more advice I'd love to hear it!

  8. Well I hope that helped! Yeah I have quite a bit of experience in Maya, and I would be happy to help you out with any materials/lighting/texturing issues you may be having as you prepare for your final render (I'm actually in your class this is why I know about what the project is). I've been tutoring Jordan in our class for a while, and I would be happy to answer any questions you have. Just shoot me an e-mail (jman.fender@comcast.net). Good luck!
